HOLISTIC HELP FOR PMS & PMDD
Most women will experience some degree of PMS during their lifetime: whether it’s a headache, mild irritability, or the occasional cramping pain, we all know what it’s like. For many, these symptoms can be quite severe and really stop women from living their lives fully. This is where holistic treatment and natural remedies can gently help turn things around.
What is PMS & PMDD?
PMS stands for Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, sometimes known as pre-menstrual stress or PMT (pre-menstrual tension). PMDD stands for Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder, and is becoming increasingly common. In this condition, symptoms of PMS are experienced in an extreme way, particularly the emotional ones.
Both conditions can occur at any time during a woman’s reproductive years: as a teenager, after having children, during perimenopause, and anywhere in between. Symptoms can last for a few days before a period, up to the whole 2 weeks from ovulation to the next period.
Common symptoms include:
Irritability
Mood swings
Tearfulness
Spiralling thoughts
Anxiety and/or panic attacks
Depression
Overwhelm
Headaches
Cramping pains
Insomnia
Bloating
Acne
Irregular eating patterns
Fluid retention
As a homeopath and health coach, I work with several different methods in order to help people in the most effective way possible for their individual symptoms.
“After suffering with PMDD for all of my adult life I had reached a point where I didn’t know what else to try. A friend recommended Alice and all I can say is she has changed my life!”
Homeopathy for PMS & PMDD
In a client’s first appointment I ask in depth about their current symptoms, about their medical history, and about who they are as a person. This enables any prescription to be completely individualised to them. However, their are some homeopathic remedies which are particularly helpful for hormonal issues, and here are 5 which are great for pre-menstrual symptoms.

Natural Support for PMS & PMDD
There are many supplements that can be effective for some people, such as Ashwagandha and Evening Primrose Oil. They can be worth a try but I don’t find them universally effective and so they would not be my first recommendation. Instead I use organ support remedies, tissue salts and occasionally supplements as well.
Organ Support Remedies
The 2 organs which often need support to alleviate symptoms of PMS & PMDD are the liver and the kidneys. This is because they are both organs of elimination, helping the body process and breakdown excess or old hormones.
LIVER SUPPORT is often needed if there are symptoms such as headaches, acne, poor sleep and irritability. Remedies such as Chelidonium and Carduus Marianus (Milk Thistle) work effectively and gently.
KIDNEY SUPPORT may be required if there is water retention, needing the toilet in the night, fatigue, and dry skin. In this case, Berberis (Barberry) is a wonderful remedy.
Tissue Salts
Tissue salts can be used daily for targeted treatment against the specific symptoms of PMS & PMDD.
MAG PHOS is my most commonly prescribed tissue salt for pre-menstrual issues as it is brilliantly effective against cramping pains just before or at the start of a period.
NAT MUR is available as tissue salts as well as a homeopathic remedy, and can help water retention as it works on fluid balance within the body.
SILICEA can be a great help with skin issues, including acne, as well as hair that is falling out, and cracked nails.
Supplements
MAGNESIUM as a supplement can really reduce period pain and may help with sleep and headaches too. You can also add magnesium rich foods to your diet , such as green leafy veg, nuts, avocado, and dark chocolate.
VITAMIN D is something that many people are deficient in, especially during the winter months. It helps relieve PMS symptoms for some people, especially those associated with mood changes.
CALCIUM is needed in the body to enable magnesium and vitamin D to work. Studies have shown that it can reduce fatigue and depression pre-menstrually.
